Study hours · JEE Advanced

How many hours a day should you study for JEE Advanced?

Short answer

Plan JEE Advanced hours by window: 3–4 focused hours on school days until JEE Main in January (6–8 for droppers), 1–2 a day during Class 12 board papers, and 6–8 once only Advanced is left. A full paper day is 6 hours of writing, plus about 3 hours of review the next day.

Hours a day by stage of preparation

StageWhenHours a dayFocus
Build: Main and Advanced togetherNow (October 2026) to about 10 days before JEE Main Session 13–4 hDroppers: 6–8 hours. Finish every chapter for JEE Main, then take your strong chapters to Advanced depth with one multi-concept problem block a day. Start the nine Advanced-only chemistry chapters here, because JEE Main chemistry doesn't cover them as units. Class 12 students can push to 6–8 hours on Sundays and holidays.
JEE Main Session 1 run-inMid-January to the end of Session 1 (22–30 Jan 2027, tentative)3–4 hDroppers: 6–7 hours. Main-format papers and accuracy only; no new Advanced chapters. A good Main score is the entry ticket, so this fortnight belongs to Main.
Board seasonEnd of Session 1 to your last Physics, Chemistry or Maths board paper (9 March in 2026)1–2 hDroppers: 7–8 hours. Class 12: boards first, plus a short Advanced problem set on days without a PCM paper and none the day before one. Droppers: your deepest Advanced weeks, with Advanced-only chapters, multi-concept sets and a paper pair every 7–10 days.
JEE Main Session 2 (only if you need it)One to two weeks before Session 2 (2–8 April in 2026; 2027 dates not out)6–7 hOnly if you aren't confident your Session 1 result puts you in your category's share of the top 2,50,000 in the JEE Main B.E./B.Tech. paper, the 2026 performance criterion. Main-format papers and fixes, then back to Advanced the day after your paper.
Advanced-only sprintFrom your last board or JEE Main paper to a week before JEE Advanced (39 days from Session 2 to the exam in 2026)6–8 hTwo paper pairs a week at the real times, each reviewed the next morning; multi-concept sets from your error log on other days; one light day a week. Paper days are 6 hours of writing, other working days 7.5–8, and the light day about 3.
Final weekThe last 7 days before JEE Advanced4–5 hOne last paper pair early in the week, then formula sheets, error-log redos and waking at exam-day time. No new chapters. Download the admit card as soon as it opens (11 May in 2026).

Focused study hours a day: planning ranges, not rules.

Work out your own number

These ranges assume an average starting point. Enter your exam date, the chapters you have left and your free hours in the study hours calculator for a figure that fits you, then lay the hours out week by week in the timetable maker.

What these ranges assume

  • Focused hours are self-study on JEE problems, papers, reviews and notes. School, coaching lectures, travel, meals and board-only homework are not counted.
  • A Class 12 school day leaves room for 3–4 focused hours; Sundays and holidays for 6–8.
  • A dropper can sustain 6–8 focused hours on six days a week plus a lighter seventh day of about 3 hours.
  • Outside paper days, a day is capped at about 8 focused hours so that 7–8 hours of sleep, meals and breaks still fit.
  • A serious attempt at one multi-concept Advanced problem, including checking the solution, takes 15–25 minutes; the arithmetic uses 20.
  • Taking a weak chapter to Advanced depth takes about 10 hours (about 30 problems at 20 minutes each).
  • First study of an Advanced-only chemistry chapter takes about 4 hours on average.
  • A full paper pair costs about 9 hours: 6 writing at exam times and about 3 reviewing the next day.
  • Two paper pairs a week is the most that still leaves time to review both properly.
  • A JEE Main Session 2 run is about 40 focused hours of Main-format papers and fixes over one to two weeks.
  • Class 12 students keep 1–2 hours of Advanced problems on board-season days without a PCM paper, and none the day before one.
  • After the last PCM board paper, hours ramp up over three or four days (about 4, 5, 6, then 7) before full sprint days.
  • The final week runs at 4–5 focused hours a day.
  • The 2027 calendar keeps 2026's shape (Session 2 in early April, JEE Advanced in mid-to-late May) until NTA and the IITs announce dates.
  • The worked example assumes a last board paper on Saturday 13 March 2027 and JEE Advanced on Sunday 16 May 2027 (neither date has been announced), with 14 March taken off.

Why do JEE Advanced hours work differently from JEE Main hours?

An Advanced hour buys fewer solved problems, the syllabus is longer in places, and the weeks you can give to Advanced alone are few. The JEE (Advanced) 2026 information brochure describes two compulsory papers of three hours each on the same day, with questions "designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability". A multi-concept problem you attempt honestly, get stuck on and then check takes much longer than a one-step formula question; we plan on 15–25 minutes per serious attempt.

Three details change the budget:

  • Chapters JEE Main doesn't cover. In chemistry alone, the JEE (Advanced) 2026 syllabus has nine headings with no matching unit in NTA's JEE Main 2026 syllabus: States of Matter (gases and liquids), Solid State, Surface Chemistry, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, Isolation of Metals, Environmental Chemistry, Polymers and Chemistry in Everyday Life. Main chemistry practice won't cover them as chapters (the gas laws overlap a little with kinetic theory in Main physics), so they need their own hours. Our JEE Advanced syllabus summary lists every chapter by subject.
  • Marking you only see on the day. The brochure says negative marks may be awarded for some questions and that the marking scheme is given in the instructions at the exam. Part of every review hour goes on deciding which question types to attempt.
  • A short runway. In 2026 the last JEE Main Session 2 papers were on 8 April and JEE Advanced was on 17 May, 39 days later. Depth has to be built before then, not squeezed into those weeks.

Which 2027 dates set your JEE Advanced study windows?

Five events split the year: JEE Main Session 1, the Class 12 board papers, JEE Main Session 2, JEE Advanced registration and the exam itself. When we checked on 12 October 2026, only Session 1 had 2027 dates, so the stages above lean on the 2026 calendar and will move when the official notices come out.

Event2027 status (checked 12 Oct 2026)2026 dates, for reference
JEE Main Session 122–24 and 28–30 Jan 2027, with 31 Jan as a buffer, in NTA's tentative calendar21–24 and 28–29 Jan 2026
CBSE Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Maths papers2027 date sheet not out20 Feb, 28 Feb and 9 Mar 2026 (exams began 17 Feb)
JEE Main Session 2Not scheduled; NTA's calendar only runs to March 2027Papers from 2 to 8 Apr 2026
JEE Advanced registrationNot announced23 Apr to 2 May 2026, later extended to 5 May
JEE Advanced examNot announced; expected in May 2027Sunday, 17 May 2026

If you're on a state board, put your own board dates in the second row; they change your board-season stage more than anything else. The JEE Advanced 2027 countdown switches to the official date once the IITs publish it.

How many hours does a full JEE Advanced paper day take?

Count about 9 focused hours spread over two days: 6 hours writing Paper 1 and Paper 2, then roughly 3 hours reviewing both the next morning. In 2026, Paper 1 ran from 09:00 to 12:00 IST and Paper 2 from 14:30 to 17:30 IST, with two and a half hours in between.

Rehearse the whole day, gap included: eat a proper lunch, don't open Paper 1's solutions, and start Paper 2 on the minute. The exam is computer-based only, and the brochure advises candidates to take the mock tests in the Resources section of jeeadv.ac.in, so use them for at least one rehearsal.

In the Advanced-only sprint, two paper days fit into a 46-hour week:

Day typeDays a weekFocused hours a dayHours a week
Paper day: Paper 1 and Paper 2 at exam times2612
Review day: both papers' mistakes, then fixes27.515
Problem day: multi-concept sets and weak chapters2816
Light day133
Total746

That averages a little over 7 focused hours across the six working days. A third paper day in the same week usually costs a review, and a paper nobody reviews mostly measures what you already knew.

How should Class 12 students split hours between boards and JEE Advanced?

Put boards first from the end of JEE Main Session 1 to your last Physics, Chemistry or Maths paper, and keep 1–2 hours of Advanced-level problems on days without a PCM paper. In 2026, CBSE's Class 12 exams began on 17 February, and the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics papers were on 20 February, 28 February and 9 March.

Board revision isn't wasted JEE time: derivations, reaction mechanisms and NCERT theory are the base that Advanced problems build on. What fades during boards is stamina on long problems, and a short daily set keeps it alive. Skip the set on the day before a PCM paper and sleep instead.

After your last PCM paper, ramp up over three or four days (about 4, 5, 6, then 7 hours) instead of jumping straight to a full sprint day. For the months when school, boards and JEE all run together, see balancing Class 12 boards with JEE.

How many hours a day should a JEE Advanced dropper study?

Plan on 6–8 focused hours on six days and a lighter seventh, and make February and March your biggest weeks, because that is the stretch Class 12 students lose to boards. JEE (Advanced) 2026 allowed at most two attempts, in two consecutive years, so for many droppers this is the last try. That argues for steady weeks and full nights of sleep, not 12-hour days.

A dropper's February and March can hold:

  • the nine Advanced-only chemistry chapters, early in February, so they get revised twice before May;
  • one paper pair every 7–10 days, reviewed the next morning;
  • mixed multi-concept sets drawn from your error log on the remaining days.

If you're also writing JEE Main Session 2, give it one to two Main-format weeks, then switch back the day after your paper. The JEE dropper study plan covers the daily routine around these hours.

How do you work out your own JEE Advanced hours?

Add up the hours your remaining Advanced work needs, divide by the full study days left in the window, and compare the answer with what your day can hold. Take a hypothetical Class 12 student who hasn't started the Advanced-only chapters, whose last board paper is on Saturday 13 March 2027, and assume JEE Advanced lands on Sunday 16 May 2027 (neither date is announced). After a day off, 15 March to 9 May is eight weeks, or 48 working days once each week keeps a light day (the ramp-up days count among them); 10 to 15 May stays light.

Work left after boardsHow we counted itHours
9 Advanced-only chemistry chapters4 hours each36
15 weak chapters to take to Advanced depth10 hours each (about 30 problems at 20 minutes)150
JEE Main Session 2 runMain-format papers and fixes over two weeks40
10 Advanced paper pairs9 hours each, review included90
Error-log redos and formula sheets3 hours a week for 8 weeks24
Total340

340 hours over 48 days is about 7.1 focused hours a day, right at the sprint's ceiling with nothing spare for a bad week, and the lighter ramp-up days push the other days a little higher still. Skipping the Session 2 run saves 40 hours and brings it to 6.25; cutting two paper pairs as well saves another 18 hours, or about 5.9 a day. Decide which cut you'd make before you need to.

Our study hours calculator runs the same sum with your own chapter count and exam date, and keeps a buffer for days you lose.

Frequently asked questions

JEE Advanced ke liye roz kitne ghante padhna chahiye?

There's no official figure, so work out your own: add the hours your remaining chapters, Advanced-only topics and paper pairs need, divide by the study days left, and check the result stays under about 8 a day. As a planning range, that usually means 3–4 on school days now, 1–2 during board papers and 6–8 after them.

Is 12 hours a day necessary for JEE Advanced?

No rule says so, and this plan doesn't ask for it. Normal days are capped at about 8 focused hours so that 7–8 hours of sleep, meals and breaks still fit. Both papers are on one day, so the exam rewards staying sharp across six hours of writing, which tired 12-hour weeks work against. If your work needs more, cut scope or start the Advanced-only chapters earlier.

How many days are there between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?

In 2026, the last JEE Main Session 2 papers were on 8 April and JEE Advanced was on 17 May, 39 days later. Neither the JEE Main 2027 Session 2 dates nor the JEE Advanced 2027 date had been announced when we checked on 12 October 2026.

Should I skip JEE Main Session 2 to get more time for Advanced?

Only if you're confident your Session 1 result puts you comfortably inside your category's share of the top 2,50,000 in the JEE Main B.E./B.Tech. paper, the performance criterion for 2026 (the IITs fill that number category by category). If you aren't sure, a one-to-two-week Session 2 run costs about 40 focused hours in our worked example, far less than missing eligibility.

Do coaching class hours count towards JEE Advanced study hours?

Count them separately. The ranges on this page are focused self-study: solving problems, writing papers, reviewing them and revising notes. Lectures introduce ideas, but Advanced-level problem solving is built in the hours when you attempt problems on your own.
