IIT Madras is organising GATE 2027 over three weekends: 6–7, 13–14 and 20–21 February 2027. Admit cards are due on 4 January 2027 and results on 19 March 2027. Which day you write depends on your paper, so this page counts to the first exam day.
The organiser has revised the syllabi of the GATE 2027 test papers. Download your paper's new syllabus from gate2027.iitm.ac.in before you plan revision around older notes.
What GATE 2027 tests
- A 3-hour computer-based test with 65 questions for 100 marks: 10 General Aptitude questions worth 15 marks, and 55 subject questions.
- In most engineering papers the 85 non-aptitude marks split into 13 for Engineering Mathematics and 72 for the core subject; a few papers (such as DA, CY, MA and PH) use 85 subject marks.
- Three question types: multiple choice (MCQ), multiple select (MSQ) and numerical answer (NAT). Questions carry 1 or 2 marks.
- Only MCQs have negative marking: 1/3 mark off for a wrong 1-mark MCQ and 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark MCQ. MSQ and NAT have no negative marking, and MSQ gives no partial credit.
- There are 30 test papers. You can write one, or two from the allowed two-paper combinations.
Your GATE 2027 plan by days left
More than 4 months left
Finish first coverage of your paper's core subjects against the revised 2027 syllabus, and note any topics that are new to you.
61–120 days left
Close the remaining subjects and start solving previous GATE papers subject by subject, then topic by topic. Keep a formula and short-notes sheet for each subject.
Practise General Aptitude for 20–30 minutes a few times a week. It's 15 marks in every paper, whatever your branch.
31–60 days left
Take one full 3-hour mock a week on a computer, since GATE is computer-based. Review each mock by question type: MCQ errors cost marks, while MSQ and NAT errors only cost the chance to score.
Spend the other days revising weak subjects from your notes.
8–30 days left
Two full mocks a week, plus revision of formula sheets. Settle your attempt order: for example, General Aptitude first, then 1-mark questions, then 2-mark ones.
Download your admit card once it's out (due 4 January) and check your exam date and session.
Last 7 days
No new topics. Revise formula sheets and the questions you got wrong in mocks, and take one light mock at your session's time.
If your paper is on a later weekend, keep going with this phase's routine until your own exam day.
