UPSC's calendar for 2027 puts the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination on Sunday, 23 May 2027. The notification is due on 13 January 2027, and applications close on 2 February 2027. UPSC notes that calendar dates can change, so confirm against the notification once it's out.
Mains 2027 is scheduled to start on 20 August 2027, 89 days after Prelims, so a plan that leaves answer writing until after the Prelims result has very little room.
What UPSC Prelims 2027 tests
- Two compulsory objective papers on the same day: General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT), each 200 marks and two hours.
- Paper II is qualifying: you need at least 33% in it, and the Prelims cut-off is decided on Paper I marks alone.
- Each wrong answer costs one-third of the marks for that question, in both papers.
- Prelims marks don't count towards the final ranking; they decide who writes Mains.

Finish the first reading of the static GS subjects (polity, history, geography, economy, environment, science and technology), and keep daily current-affairs notes going alongside.

4–6 months left
Revise the static subjects and start previous years' Prelims papers subject by subject. Add one weekly sectional test.
Write a few Mains-style answers each week on topics you've just revised, so Mains preparation isn't starting from zero in June.
2–4 months left
Switch to Prelims mode. Daily MCQ practice, one full GS Paper I test a week, and a monthly revision of your current-affairs notes.
Applications close on 2 February, right at the start of this stretch, so fill in the form as soon as the notification is out on 13 January.
15–60 days left
Two full GS Paper I tests a week and a full CSAT paper every week. After each GS test, review wrong answers by source: a gap in static notes, current affairs, or elimination gone wrong.
Last 14 days
No new sources. Revise your notes and test errors, and take a couple of full mocks in the real timing: Paper I in the morning, CSAT in the afternoon.
