UPSC's calendar for 2027 puts the Civil Services (Main) Examination on five exam days starting Friday, 20 August 2027. The paper-by-paper timetable isn't out yet. In 2026, UPSC split the five days over two weekends: Essay and the four General Studies papers first, then the language papers and the Optional the following weekend. This page counts to 20 August, the first exam day.
Only candidates who clear Prelims on Sunday, 23 May 2027 write Mains, which leaves 89 days between the two. Under the 2026 rules, your Optional subject and Mains medium are fixed when you apply for Prelims, and the calendar has applications closing on 2 February 2027. So most Mains work has to be under way well before Prelims, not after it.
Finish a full first pass of your Optional syllabus: its two papers are 500 of the 1,750 merit marks. Alongside it, turn your General Studies notes into something you can write answers from, not just read.
Write a few timed answers every week and an essay every fortnight. Settle your Optional and Mains medium before you apply: the notification is due on 13 January and applications close on 2 February.
Prelims on 23 May falls 89 days before Mains, so most of this stretch belongs to Prelims: Mains only happens if you clear it.
Keep Mains alive with a small weekly block, such as two or three timed answers and one Optional topic revised, so the writing habit doesn't stop for three months.
Start Mains revision the day after Prelims; don't wait for the result. Take full General Studies and Optional tests in three-hour sittings, two or three a week, plus an essay every week. Review each test for structure and time per answer, not just content.
Revise once or twice for the two language papers. You only need 25% in each, but missing it means the rest of your papers aren't counted.
Check the timetable once UPSC publishes it and rehearse your own exam days. In 2026 the General Studies days had two three-hour papers each, so practise writing two full papers in a day.
Revise from your own notes and model answers. No new sources.
No new material. Revise essay outlines, General Studies keywords and examples, and your Optional notes, and keep your sleep times fixed for the morning papers.
Download the e-admit card when UPSC uploads it, and check your centre and the date of every paper.
UPSC's calendar for 2027 lists the Civil Services (Main) Examination from Friday, 20 August 2027, over five exam days. The paper-by-paper timetable comes later, and UPSC says calendar dates can change.
